Omerna’s mission is to reduce crop loss by developing targeted, dsRNA-based solutions that protect crops from fungal pathogens.
Between 30% and 45% of agricultural produce is lost from farm to fork: an estimated $940 billion every year, and a large share of that loss is driven by fungal disease. Conventional chemical fungicides are environmentally harmful and drive pathogen resistance, and tightening regulations are lowering maximum residue levels and removing active ingredients from approved lists, leaving farmers with fewer effective tools.
There is a clear need for effective, targeted alternatives to chemical fungicides.
Omerna addresses this with spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS): dsRNA sprays that suppress specific genes in the target pathogen, paired with a proprietary encapsulation mechanism that protects the dsRNA construct and controls its release in the field.
Because the approach targets the pathogen’s own genetic sequences, it is designed to be highly species-specific, addressing a $20 billion global fungicide market.
